Do we have a time constraint?

jillaine 11-19-2012 02:37 PM

Just your own. The point of this challenge is to create a supportive environment to help you get through your stash.

QuilterMomma 11-19-2012 04:38 PM

You mean this is a therapy group? Is this so we do not buy more or just to give us an incentive to use what we have so we can buy more. :D

I am using up three yards of fabric right now for the backings on my thanksgiving table runners I am working on getting done. I hav ethe binding about done just have to finish quilting them. I will be piecing the back on one of them just so I can use it up. So that will be three more finishes and using up that stash this month. Bought the turkey fabric two years ago and has been waiting for me to make these up. Cut up and then resewed. I like one a lot, and the other two aren't real bad. Well, better get a move on.

Nothing wrong with that, if they're coming to me. I love the Asian theme fabrics - have a whole passel of it - and lots of ideas, too. send some my way!!

I signed up yesterday. Been lurking a few weeks to see what this forum is. I like what I have seen.

I have a big pile of stash but not all is really quilt material. All my quilt material has not gotten moved here yet. I have too much. I do make quilts of different materials. So I do need to use up alot of material.

But I still buy a few pieces of special material. When the get some in it seems only one chance to get it. I am not getting to city much. Are the quilt blocks I have sewed be counted as part of my stash yet? They have to be set in to tops to make a quilt of them. I was trying to get rid of scraps before I moved and I cut little blocks and made 16 patch blocks. Lot of blocks sewed. I will set the blocks with slashing and some will have to have a border on each block to make it larger. I tie them. I will using material for borders and backs and slashing. It is piles up here.

So guess you can count me in as I do not want to buy more material. I will try to limit my buying to only elk, deer, antelope and bear. Moose too.

This challenge's purpose is to support us by celebrating every project that is born of one's stash. Photos are strongly encouraged.

Anyone can play-- whether or not you're on a fabric purchasing moratorium.

To qualify as a success, 90% of your finished project must be made from your stash. For quilts, this means 90% of your quilt TOP. (Although Challenge participants will receive extra points-- cheers and applause-- for projects that are 100% stash-produced.)

"Finished" means all the way done and ready to use.

Who's going to post their first "made from stash" photo?

I have two questions
1. Does "stash" count if you bought the fabric for a specific quilt?
2. Does "stash" count if you raid your mother's that she inherited from her mother

I have completed ONE quilt top this year (June) that I started when my daughter was 15 (she's 32 now) She chose the pattern and I bought the fabric... I had to buy the backing material but the batting is cotton that my mother got from my grandmother's stash.
The 2nd quilt I'm working on is again one I bought the fabric for 17 years ago for my dd #2's quilt that she pick out the pattern and it's about 1/2 completed... goal is to have both completed by Dec 25, 2012 :D

I LOVE that blue/white one! I think maybe I'll do one like it in pink/brown or pink/gray or gray/yellow. I have those colors that I need to use and I really thing this design would look great for it. Thanks for sharing!

Coloradowest 12-03-2012 04:51 PM

I have finished 5 quilts this year. First was John Deere tractor quilt, I and bought the panel and appliques several years ago. Green material for back I had and the white. Second quilt was 16 patch I had sewed the block for out of scrap before. I set in blue slashing and white back. I had the white and blue. I have did 3 more of the 16 pathes same way. Nothing bought this year I was used. I am working on the 6th quilt this year. Better say working on the quilt top at this point. I think I have figured it out. 16 patch with smaller blocks and each block has white border and will be set with blue. The other have of the blue sheet. All my 16 patches the blocks were not sewed this year but all came from scrap I had stacked back for quilts years ago. Blocks are multi colored and none alike. I do not quilt and I have tied them. I did buy 2 quilt batts and used them. I had the yarn for tieing. Really I have not made any head way on this stash. I have got to do it.

pokeyscorner 12-15-2012 08:22 AM

I really need this!! I just organized my stash & FOUND fabrics I didn't even remember buying. At least I didn't do what my sister did -- she bought the same pc. 3 x's.:o I'M IN!!

QuilterMomma 01-02-2013 10:07 AM

I am going to report that I used up at least 20 yards of stash this last weekend finishing my UFOs. So excited. But now for those scraps that have reproduced some more. I have six more tops to quilt that I had done. Guess we will be using up some more stash for sure. Loving getting it used so I will be able to enjoy some new stuff soon. Even my Christmas shash got used.

Christmas Tree Skirt

1 Attachment(s)
Stash busted. Quilted tree skirt made completely from stash  (backing included)! No, I didn't finish it in time for Christmas. Yes, I finished it before the tree came down. Made from the remnants of many medieval costumes (we are Dagorhirrim!) Fabrics are crepe-backed satins and brocade, plus one mystery gold fabric.

jillaine 01-05-2013 04:47 AM

That is the most beautiful tree skirt I've ever seen!

QuilterMomma 01-07-2013 08:52 AM

Those fabrics are so pretty on that skirt. Nice job.

QuilterMomma 01-14-2013 10:04 AM

I am proud to say that I do not have that much in my "stash", but the scraps can add up to some heavy yardage and the kits I have yet to do.

mooshie 01-16-2013 08:39 AM

I don't really have a very large quilting stash, but it is enough for about 8 quilts. So, I don't know that it'll last all year (I really doubt it), but I'm in for using up the stash I do have. :)

QuilterMomma 01-17-2013 11:34 AM

I actually can say I busted some stash. Finished up a table runner and a DQ. Goodness me, something actually done. 1.5 yards down.

Milli 01-17-2013 12:12 PM

Could finish quilt top but not quilt I have no stash of batting and backing.

dd 01-18-2013 05:03 AM

Working on a quilt for our pastor who is very ill. It's all stash and a lot of scraps, even the backing and I think I have enough batting too. Yay!

deedum 01-21-2013 01:56 PM

I just finished a little scrappy baby quilt. Trying to use up 2" scraps, this is what I came up with. Not a thing of beauty but I used up scraps! I finished 2 nice dog beds. Making a shawl for the nursing home.

adamae 01-21-2013 03:03 PM

I have three BOM projects started for this year, will use up fabric with the Dorcas Group making quilts for the nursing home, have 13 quilt tops to finish and have made a goal of utilizing my stash vs shopping for new. It is not a hard and fast rule but is working good at this point. I could not empty my stash within 20 years as it has taken longer than that to accumulate it. Hoping to finish all the wip tops this year. Have been inspired so much by this quilting board and its wonderful members.

Here are a couple things I have finished lately using my stash. I will post more as I take pictures. I must say, it is fun making items without having to buy anything new. Love "shopping" my own stash.

Attached is a photo of the quilt that I'm working on for our pastor who is very ill. I sandwiched it at church the other day and everyone who saw it really liked it. It's supposed to be gifts from God and he can imagine what is in each package. Sorry it's sideways, I don't know how to turn it around.

Stash busting marathon- Sewing Machine Cover

2 Attachment(s)
I was going through the stash and decided to make a jazzed-up sewing machine cover. Although the machine came with a cover (with the brand name repeated all over it), it was just utilitarian. So I looked for a tutorial, finding this one: http://purlsandpleats.wordpress.com/...machine-cover/. As you can see I did make a pocket for one end of it and I also lined it with white muslin. Now onto the next stash busting project starting with a UFO...

100% stash 32 x 32 comfort quilt. did have to purchase thread to finish binding. Even the binding was from stash !! Back is little fairies dancing in ballet shoes with wands.

Vanogay 01-28-2013 01:29 PM

Neat projects. I have one that I'll show next week when the last border is on.

mom-6 01-30-2013 07:07 PM

Just did my blocks for the batik swap entirely from stash. Now working on a throw for DGS that is also from stash. It is two pieces of the Disney "Cars" fabric that I originally was going to do curtains for his room or else pillowcases but he wants a blanket. I've been using fleece on the back of most of my throws lately. It makes them so cuddly and doesn't require batting either.

createfourpaws 02-02-2013 06:13 PM

Just found this stash busting thread. I am in, I need to bust some of my stash. I did the mystery train ride and bust so little you dont even notice it wen looking at my stash.

Time to bust more.
