On the farm, Mom put a WHOLE pound in the butter dish and it was never kept in the refrigerator. We had a small family, so it didnt disappear real fast, but it never got rancid either.

Ours is usually out until gone but the hubs likes to fry up his eggs and I like to use a pat or two on veggies after steaming. Mind you the butter melts and slides off the veggies. I also use unsalted. We go through a stick about every 8-10 days. [QUOTE=Geri B;7797227]I understand the whipped butter I have may melt if left out, or whatever, but I was thinking of stick butter. sticks is what I usually buy, but keep all in fridge. So for those who keep stick butter

I bought four little covered dishes. I cut a pound of butter into four pieces. Put 3 dishes in the fridge keep the fourth on the counter. No problems, always easy to spread.
