My recipe doesn't call for cream of tartar so I would think not. Rather than do your recipe without it though, I would use another recipe or get some.

According to the McCormick spice website, cream of tarter doesn't have a good substitute. But if kept tightly closed it keeps pretty much forever.

Cream of tartar last quite awhile! Think I paid couple dollars and got about 2 years ago. Check the expiration date. You can use Cream of tartar around the house too!

Every recipe I found here for snickerdoodles uses cream of tartar. I don't think cream of tartar spoils, so just buy a small amount. In a bulk food store, they can usually bag up as much as you want to buy.

If you have pots that discolor easily when boiling water, this will stop it. You can use it to clean your crock pots, etc and the stuff that builds up goes away quickly. Use it in merange (mspelled) to make it fluff and stay stiff longer. Lots of uses if you look

I can't stand the taste, so I just skip it.

My recipe does call for Cr. Tarter so I just use it and also use it when I burn something in the bottom of a pan. Works wonders! Just shake some in the pan with some water, and heat for awhile, and the burned whatever comes right out!
Mariah.

The cream of tartar keeps the cookies light and helps them rise so I guess you could jsut add more baking soda or baking powder but have never tried it. The bottle I am using is two years old but no where near the expiration date. I also use it for egg white meringue.
