As a child, my friend's mother made this all the time and I thought it was quite delicious. She had grown up in the depression and maintained many frugal ways. Now, I have trouble with the bacon drippings part but always take this cake to school for my history students.
Eggless, Milkless, Butterless Cake
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup water
1 cup raisins
2 tbsp. bacon drippings
1/2 tsp. salt
1-1/2 cup flour
3/4 tsp soda
1/2 tsp powdered ginger
1 tsp. cinnamon
Cook first five ingredients together. Allow to cool.
Add dry ingredients to cooled raisin mixture.
Bake in greased loaf pan at 325-350 oven for 1 hour.

Hi! I also had the recipe from the back of the SunMaid raisin box. That is the only one I ever knew. I just downloaded it from their website. Years ago I use to bake it at Christmas time and give as gifts, I hope this recipe is what you are looking for; if not the same maybe give it a try. It may be a good substitute for your g-mother's.
Good luck.
Good luck.

I have three recipes from my mother that are WWII or earlier that might fit the bill.
Eggless Raisin cake
Boil 1 cup raisins in two cups water for 10 mins. Add 1/2 cup butter or oleo and let cool. Add 1 3/4 cup flour, 1 tsp baking soda, 1/2 tsp salt, 1 cup sugar, 1/2 tsp cinnamon and 1/2 tsp nutmeg. Bake in greased flat pan.
That's all that's written on the card so you'll have to guess at the temp and time.
Mayonnaise Cake
3/4 cups chopped dates or raisins, 1 cup boiling water. Pour water over fruit and let it cool. Cream mayonnaise & sugar. Sift all dry ing together, 2 cups cake flour, 1 tsp baking soda, 1/4 tsp salt, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1 Tbls cocoa. Mix into wet ing and mix well. Add 1 tsp vanilla and 3/4 cup chopped nuts. Bake in two layers in greased and floured tins for 45 mins @ 350. Frost with your favorite frosting.
Tomato Mystery Cake
2 Tbls shortening, 1 cup sugar, 1 1/2 cups flour, 1 tsp nutmeg, 1 tsp baking soda, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1 tsp cloves, 1/4 tsp salt, 3/4 cup raisins, 1 cup walnuts chopped, 1 can tomato soup. Cream shortening & sugar. Sift flour, all spices, salt & soda. Add walnuts & raisins, mix throughly add tomato soup, mix well. Bake 40 mins at 375. Frost when cool.
