Marilyn’s Turtle Cake Recipe

13 X 9 inch greased cake pan
Pre-heat oven to 350

1 box German Chocolate cake mix with pudding in it
¼ lb margarine
14 oz. canned sweetened condensed milk (Eagle Brand)
14 oz. caramels (unwrap them ahead of time)
6 oz. pecans
12 oz. chocolate chips

Prepare cake mix as directed on the package. Pour ½ of the mix into a greased 13 X 9 inch cake pan. Bake at 350 for 15 minutes.

While this is baking, put the caramels in the top of a double boiler, add the margarine and sweetened condensed milk. Cook until margarine and caramels are melted and the sauce is thickened. Stir every few minutes. Sauce should be smooth and thick.

Let caramel sauce cool a little, then pour it over the baked cake. Pour the rest of the cake mix carefully over the caramel sauce. Sprinkle the pecans over the cake mix. Sprinkle the chocolate chips over the pecans. Bake at 350 for 25 minutes.

Absolutely Fabulous!

That sounds yummy, and I suppose it would not need a frosting?

My friend makes this for Christmas. She cuts it into small bars...too rich to eat much at once.

No, nothing else. It comes out with melted chocolate and nuts on top. Oozing caramel (I usually put in extra caramels) in the middle. Very rich. Small pieces... or not! lol

My Mom used to make this all the time when I was a kid. She stopped making it after all of kids moved out and she had no one to unwrap the carmels for her. I make it now but I cheat and use carmel ice cream topping in place of all thoses wraped carmel candies.

Now thats a great idea.... Do you still mix the caramel sauce with the Eagle Brand Milk and butter, or do you use it instead of all that? I am up for anything that make "yummy" into 'easier!'

I don't use the milk or butter. Just the carmel ice cream topping.
