Does anyone have a really good bread pudding recipe they would like to share? I have tried many but still have not found the perfect recipe yet.

Here's my favorite. I love custardy bread pudding and this is light. Give it a try.

Here's Joani2s (I can't open Ellageo's either)

Overnight Bread Pudding

½ loaf of thick slices of bread, cut into 9 pieces. (I use Texas style bread.)
3 cups milk 2 Tbsp. sugar
Liberal nutmeg & cinnamon 6 large eggs
1 Tbsp. vanilla extract 2 Tbsp. butter or margarine

Grease 9x13 baking dish. Arrange bread in a single layer in the greased
pan, squeeze slices to fit. In a large bowl whisk milk, eggs, sugar and vanilla
until blended. Pour evenly over bread. Sprinkle cinnamon & nutmeg over top.
Cover and refrigerate overnight.

To serve. Heat oven to 350. Uncover baking dish. Dot top with butter or
margarine and bake 45 minutes or until set and light golden brown.

NOW.how about a good vanilla sauce to go with that pudding....

Cottage Dee 09-02-2011 08:33 AM

I was able to download, and retyped, so here it is:

BREAD PUDDING WITH LEMON SAUCE

4 Cups hamburger buns – NOT FRESH
1 Cup sugar
2 Cups whole milk
½ stick butter or margarine
¼ Cup raisins or dried cranberries
1 teaspoon Vanilla
2 Beaten eggs

Crumble bread in mixing bowl. Add milk, let sit until bread is soft. Add sugar, melted margarine or butter, and eggs. Mix well.

Add raisins or cranberries and fold in. DOT NOT STIR
Butter a 9” baking glass dish. Pour mixture into the dish and bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes or until top is brown.

TIP: Milk MUST be whole milk or canned milk. Otherwise, pudding will fall after removing from the oven. Old biscuits cause pudding to be heavy, loaf bread tends to be too thin.

LEMON SAUCE:
In a saucepan combine:
1/3 Cup sugar
2 ½ teaspoon cornstarch
Add ½ cup water, ¼ cup Real Lemon juice, and one egg yolk. Mix well.
Over medium heat, cook and stir until thick. Remove, stir in 1 Tablespoon butter or margarine until melted.

Use for topping on bread pudding

Thanks for the recipe. It reads almost like my Mother's. There is only one thing different. She used leftover biscuits. She also made a brown sugar sauce as a topping. I do have a problem with her recipe. Nothing was measured and everything was made from scratch. Oh No. Am I giving my age away?

conniebrooks 09-02-2011 10:51 AM

Mizoodie, thanks for the reciept. I love bread pudding and have never made it before. Can't wait to try it.

Try RecipeLion.com or TasteofHome.com. They both have some excellent bread pudding recipes. Even a slow cooker one that is great.

There used to be a cafeteria style dining place near our old home called Duff's. DH would take us there on Sunday after church because the kids would always eat what they took and it wasn't too bad on the wallet for a large family. This was my favorite sweet item on their menu and it always smelled just wonderful. I still make it but cut the recipe in half for just the two of us. I had to experiment with and alter alot of recipes before I got one that tasted genuine to the original. Hope you enjoy it. Ann in TN

Duffs Bread Pudding Clone
3 eggs
1 cup sugar
1 quart milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
10 cups stale 1” French or Italian bread cubes
1 1/2 cups raisins
Bourbon whiskey sauce (recipe follows)

In a large bowl, beat eggs until frothy. Beat in sugar. Add milk, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg; mix thoroughly. Add bread and raisins and toss. Set aside 15 minutes.
Generously butter 9X13 baking dish. Pour bread mixture into pan and smooth top. Bake at 350 degrees just until set, about 45 minutes. Serve warm with sauce.

Bourbon Whiskey sauce
1 1/4 cups water
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon each cinnamon and nutmeg
1/4 cup bourbon (I have used bourbon flavoring instead, but add 1/4 cup water and 2 teaspoons flavoring and add more to your taste or replace with vanilla for a different flavor)
1 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch
2 tablespoons butter

Combine water, brown sugar, and spices and bring to a boil. Stir together bourbon and cornstarch, then stir into sugar mixture. Cook and stir until thickened, about 2 minutes. Stir in butter. Serve warm.

This was my Great Grandmothers recipe....dates back to late 1800's early 1900's:

2 Slices of Bread, torn into bite sized pieces
Cinnamon

Blend eggs, sugar, vanilla & salt. Pour into buttered 1 & 1/2 quart glass casserole dish. Stir in bread pieces. Sprinkle with cinnamon. Set dish in pan of 1 inch very hot water. Bake at 350 degrees for 65-70 minutes or until knife inserted in center comes out clean. Cool, then refrigerate.

Vanilla Sauce

1 Cup Sugar
1/4 teaspoon Salt
2 Tablespoons Flour
2 Cups boiling water
1 Teaspoon Vanilla
2 Tablespoons Butter

Combine sugar, salt & flour. Add water slowly. Stirring constantly. Cook over hot water (double boiler) about 8 minutes. Add Vanilla & butter. Stir until blended. Spoon over Bread Pudding.
