watterstide 07-25-2011 10:32 AM

just made a tuna salad with noodles. and i just hate draining the tuna..

i have tried the plastic drain do-dad for the smaller cans of tuna..but it doesnt work on the larger cans.

i really don't want to pay the extra money for the bagged ready to use tuna!

so,how do you drain yours?!

Up North 07-25-2011 10:45 AM

Squish it down with the cover over the sink.

Grama Lehr 07-25-2011 10:47 AM

Sometimes, I put it in a colander and squish it down with a spoon or my fingers. . . .

sueisallaboutquilts 07-25-2011 10:48 AM

What you need is a cat!!
I drain mine by squeezing the top down and drain it into the kitties bowl. They love me on those days LOL :D

my can opener opens the can from the sides.it rolls the edges so you can't cut yourself on it..so no squishing down..

I know what you mean. Maybe you could let it start and then stop it just so it has a drainage slit in the side. When it stops draining finish the opening. If you can stop those kind once they start. Sometimes I do that with a regular can opener just so the lid won't fall off.

watterstide 07-25-2011 02:38 PM

anyways..the tuna salad is made..and wonderful. i am going to see if they make a larger can strainer!

Barb44 07-25-2011 06:06 PM

I just put mine in a regular strainer. The kind with the wire screen. I find this does a better job than squishing the lid.

Grammie Sharon 07-26-2011 02:38 AM

open the can and then squash it down and drain

Mary O 07-26-2011 02:48 AM

I open the can and use the lid but then I place the tuna on paper towels to get more liquid out cause I have a fussy hubby who hates soggy tuna after adding mayo. for sandwiches.......

Moon Holiday 07-26-2011 03:51 AM

I learned this technique from my SIL who was a caterer for 20 years.

I place a drinking glass into the sink; open tuna can and place upside with opened lid down onto the glass, and press down on the can until liquid drains out. I used to use the open can, squeeze until fingers hurt method, too, but there always seemed to be a little leftover liquid. The glass/sink method removes all the liquid. Whether you use canned tuna in oil or water, this method works great.

That's the way I do it too. I just open it 30 min early and let it drain. No squishing! Put it in the fridge if you want it to be cold.

lucniak 07-26-2011 03:55 AM

I drain mine in a small colander. works for me Good Luck

Ditto!!!!! I get the drained tuna and they get a rare but very tasty treat!

jeaninmaine 07-26-2011 05:00 AM

I just use the can opener, then put my thumbs on either side of the cover, turn it upside down over the sink and squeeze. Then move my thumbs further around the cover and squeeze again. It's pretty much dry after I'm done.

Helovesme 07-26-2011 05:51 AM

LOL...ugh, I hate draining tuna! I have found that keeping the tuna in the fridge so it's cold helps. It keeps it together better. I usually use the lid and squeeze like everyone else, and I've tried using my ricer. A little too much trouble unless I'm opening 2 cans or more.

Vat 07-26-2011 06:09 AM

I buy StarKist chunk light Tuna. It is packed in water but on the package it says no draining. And there isn't any water to drain. It is wonderful. You might want to try it.

grannypat7925 07-26-2011 06:18 AM

Put it in a strainer and mash it with a fork or spoon.

Becka 07-26-2011 06:36 AM

I just dump it in my hand and wring it out over the sink, then lay on a paper towel to "dry." (I don't like soggy tuna either :) ) The larger cans I do in two or three dumps. I separate my eggs with my hands, too.

Margie 07-26-2011 06:59 AM

Lol...this question amazes me!

kinigenie 07-26-2011 07:04 AM

that's what I do too!!

This is what I do too, but I like the idea of draining it into the cat/dog bowls. Never thought to give them a treat, duh!!!!

IdahoSandy 07-26-2011 07:43 AM

First drain off what you can using the lid to hold the tuna in can. Paper towels flolded up and put in the bottom of a bowl.

Pampered Chef makes a tuna drainer which fits the larger cans and works very well. It has little side extensions to hold so you don't get the tuna oil or water on your hands. When I can't find mine it's the old squish it over the sink.

Stacey 07-26-2011 08:01 AM

@sueisallaboutquilts, This is exactly what I do. And Kitten could be a mile away but she comes running when she smells(?) or hears(?) this happening.

I put the can in the fridge the day before (unopened) so when I open, drain, and use it, it is already very cold so I can enjoy it sooner. Especially if I forgot to do it earlier that day.
