I really hate to sound so dumb, but I have no luck with yeast. Is there an easy way to tell how warm the water is just by feel?

Think of testing a baby bottle- you want it to feel warm against your wrist, not hot, not cold.

I tried ptquilts recipe with the brown sugar, changed the ratio of wheat to white flour and it was wonderful. I will be serving it at a get together with some close friends. I still want to try Dee's health bread, but have to shop first....

I made all our bread when the kids were growing up. I even mill our own flour with a grain mill. None of them have time to bake or make bread and they ALL eat store bought white bread. Can't say I didn't try to get them off to a good start!
I still bake for DH and I. I just bake less often and freeze the extra loaves. This is soooooo good. We love it toasted for breakfast in the morning. * Exported from MasterCook * Best Bread in the World Servings : 2 loaves or 24 slices Categories : Bread, Yeast Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method -------- ------------ -------------------------------- 2 cups boiling water 1 cup rolled oats 2 tablespoons yeast ( I found this excessive. It rises too fast, I would cut in half) 1/2 cup water -- lukewarm or buttermilk or combination 1 tablespoon salt -- (optional) 1/2 cup honey 2 tablespoons butter -- melted 2 1/2 cups unbleached flour -- (2 1/2 to 3) 1 1/2 cups whole-wheat flour -- (1 1/2 to 2) 1 egg yolk -- (optional) Sesame seeds Pour boiling water over oats. Let stand until thoroughly softened. Soak yeast in lukewarm water. Add salt, honey and room temperature butter to oats. When oats are lukewarm, add yeast and mix well. Gradually add flours. When stiff, turn onto lightly floured surface and knead until dough is smooth and elastic. Put into a lightly oiled bowl, turning dough to coat all sides. Cover with a cloth and let rise 1 hour or until doubled in bulk. Oil two loaf pans. Punch down bread dough and cut in half. Knead each half briefly and shape each into a loaf. Place loaves in pans. Cover and let rise until pans are full. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Beat egg yolk lightly with 1 teaspoon water. Brush top of each loaf with egg mixture and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake 35 to 40 minutes. Turn out on a rack to cool.
