I stitch on a frame without a stitch regular just fine. Though my machine has an 11" throat.
My frame cost £800 and I sew with Janome horizon 8200. Very affordable set up!

I find zig zag too cumbersome as you have to manoeuvre the whole quilt around when doing the appliqué.
I do free motion and just go around the letter three times to secure the shape.

Though I just ordered 7 yards of a moda fabric line from another American seller and only paid £16 shipping. Which means I'm still £50 ($77)...

I just bought this gorgeous fabric from my LQS but it set me back £16($25)/meter.
Get home and find an American vendor selling it for £4($6)/ meter. Sigh! But at least it's the perfect fabric...
