Wooden spools
I also have many wooden spools, some with thread, more without. I don't see with the old thread, but have found it works for basting and is easy to remove.

It, really odd to d of so many issues with CFL bulbs. We had some in fixtures for years with nno problems. You might want to check the fixtures and the wattage of the bulbs.
