Your post really helped me with my cutting. Thanks. I did ask @ my LQS and was told to loosen the screw. Made a world of difference also ... finger tight for me was too tight!

The pattern is a McCalls Stitch & Save M5162, but any basic pattern would do. I just rip the jeans into strips, put them back together using a decorative stitch, then cut the pattern.

Haven't made any jean quilts, but I use recycled jeans to make jackets. I tear strip the jeans, sew the pieces together with a decorative stitch and line with colorful (or matching blues) cotton...

That really hurts. I did that when I was learning to sew ... on my Mom's tredle machine ... right through the nail. Fortunately, it didn't deter me, and I've been sewing for almost 70 years.
