Can't get my mini iron tip to heat up

Its a Clover Mini Iron.
I bought it new a few months back but have only just tried it.

the handle gets warm but the tip is stone cold.

Question Is there a trick to matching seams?

I try hard to be accurate but sometimes when I sew sew, say two blocks together and press open the points/seams don't match very well.
I'm a new quilter...are there any methods to avoid this?

Well, it's too small to be called a real quilt but still.

The kids fell in love with it and wouldn't budge from it so the photo includes them!
