I've had problems with a bowed bar too, and also had to replace the velcro that attaches the leader fabric to the rail. Since then, all is OK. Sorry, can't help with your thread breakage.

I LOVE the Fons and Porter one. Only problem is it is rounded so it fits in your hand nicely, but it rolls off the table. Put an elastic band around it to stop it from rolling around.
