One of my recent favorites is A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles. I lean toward spy, mystery, thriller and occasionally Orson Scott Card-type sci-fi, and this book isn't any of those.

You usually don't have to undo the stitching. Once in a while it's a little stubborn and you have to take out a couple of stitches.
