JoeJr No, it's when there isn't even a needle in the machine.

I went ahead and did a little sample stitching and it seems to work OK, so maybe it's not a problem anyway.

Rough hook race on Singer

Now that I've gotten my Singer 403A cleaned and all put back together, I'm adjusting some settings per AndyTube's videos.

The gap between the bobbin case and its position bracket is what I'm...

janiebakes Thanks for the link! My numbers are raised vs. "lowered" as in that article but it still is good info on using paint to fix this kind of thing.

RoosterW — Good idea about taking pictures. If I ever have a "next time" I'll be more careful.

Thanks! Just to be clear, it's a 403A (not a 401A). So no built-in camstack.

It's weird to have a screw left over when I had all the screws needed to put all the parts back on. I'll take a look at...

It's done!

OK, it took me a while, but Mission Accomplished!

Following along with AndyTube's videos on a Singer 403A (he calls Regina), I took off a ton of parts, cleaned them, cleaned the main body in the...

Hey, I got it out! I sprayed WD-40 on it and let it soak overnight. Then I grabbed the spool pin with Vise-grips and used a thin piece of wood on the bed to pry against. It came out a smidge, then I...

leaha, Thanks for the suggestion. I guess I'll try that though I don't know if there's any room for it to penetrate. Worth a try though!

osewme, Thanks. Yes, I found that blog post too. He seems to be talking about pins you can access from the other end. The pin in the bed of the 403A can only be gotten to from the top. So, if I drill...

How to remove spool pin

I appreciate the helpful answers to my other questions. Now I've run into another quandary. The spool pin on the bed of my Singer 403A for winding the bobbin is broken half off. It's very tight, I...

Success! I went to my local repair shop and the guy not only found the right screw, when I asked "How much?" he said "Nothing". Yay! Onward with the project.

My local SM repair shop is closed today, so I'm going tomorrow. Fingers crossed I'll find the right screw and won't have to buy a new part.

Where to find tiny Singer screw

I know this is a long shot, but I hate to waste vintage parts. My 403A is missing a tiny screw. It's one of the two on the bobbin case positioning bracket. I haven't got the machine sewing yet...

My Singer 403A restoration project

I was working on sewing a backpack for myself and was getting close to done when I got the urge to buy an old SM. I've been using my 1985 Kenmore (bought new and seldom used).

I'd heard good...

Wow, that's a shame he's in poor health. I wouldn't have even started refurbishing the 403A I got recently (my first VSM) without his videos. I sure hope he doesn't take them down anytime soon!

Red face Turns out I'm an idiot!

I tried plugging it in again to see if the light worked. I guess I hadn't tried that after getting silence when I pushed the foot controller when I first got the machine. The light worked. So I tried...

The seller said, "Unit can power on..." It didn't "power on" for me. But it was only $31 and I don't want to pursue an eBay dispute.

I still think I can get it sorted out. I texted my cousin last...

How to test wires?

OK, I borrowed a voltage tester. If it can do the job I won't have to buy any electrical testing equipment. Attached is a photo of it. I have no idea how to use it. I'd like to test the SM cord and...
