I would wash it in warm water with laundry detergent and line dry (if possible). Then find a better place to store it or run a dehumidifier in that space.

I wouldn't trim it off and make it smaller, I'd just echo it once or twice with the scallop as you envisioned. It doesn't need to go all the way to the binding. I would try to leave the same amount...
