Try applying a piece of colored tape along the 60 degree line on your ruler, that way you can identify it easily.

Take a look at "Applique 12 Easy Ways" by Elly Sienkiewicz. I have both books and Elly's book offers much more information and quite a few patterns with directions to use all the different methods.
