Just leave the tails, no back-stitching so that threads can be adjusted if necessary (pulled out) when preparing to trim the top layer...then just incorporate those tails under edge of the joined...

I storage binding by wrapping it around empty...
I storage binding by wrapping it around empty cardboard salt containers. To work with it, I roughly punch out a hole in either end. I take a plastic hanger and cut one side through near to the top...
