How often do you all change a sewing machine needle? Some say 4 hours of sewing, some say 10 and more. What do you do?

Do you use pencils to mark outlines

I use pencils but cannot see properly through the ruler to mark the next lines to quilt on . Any ideas what to use as my lines sometimes are not so straight. Help please.
