You could cut your yardage for blocks and use the various size strips for a piano key border. Or you could strip piece them and use them for totes, placemats etc. It's frustrating, that's for sure. I don't buy as many precuts as I used to. I love the variety, but prefer to cut them myself.
I agree as the Precuts seem to be off, so I started cutting them myself and then I know if its off its me !LOL

maureen cracknell has a herringbone quilt that can be done with varying width strips. it's a QAYG, so the width can be varying--"matching" doesn't have to be an issue. here's her tutorial: http://www.maureencracknellhandmade....-tutorial.html
i'm planning on doing one with remnants from a friend who makes renaissance garb--there will be lots of mismatched brocades, jacquards, etc, and i will have a grand time doing it!

How about Watermelon Shuffle? You'd just have to be sure the strips in each horizontal row are the same width.

It really bothers me to pay for 2 1/2 inch strips in a pre cut and then find out that they don't measure up. There is no reason these companies can't cut them correctly. I just used some Kafee Fasset jelly rolls. They were not the correct size. They were cut with a pinking sheers and even if I measured to the tips of the zig zag they were about 1/4 inch short. Luckily the pattern I did, as long as I was off the same amount all the time it worked out. I had the center of the quilt finished before I realized they were off. I didn't know they were cut wrong until I tried to make a border out of the leftover strips and put them with some 2 1/2 strips I cut myself. These companies should be ashamed of themselves.
