I'm with you gingerd. I often piece my quilt backs with leftovers and love to do this. I have never had issues and it adds a lovely surprise element to any quilt.

A friend suggested using the left foot on the pedal instead of the right to bring the body in line with the needle. I now alternate as I sew and it does make a difference.
