so you LA quilters out there--when you are asked to quilt a two sided quilt where it's very distinct blocks on both sides, how do you keep the blocks lined up on both sides so you aren't cutting off part of a block on the backside? Do you add strips of fabric to the back to use to clamp off of? and do you charge extra for that process? (since your back quilt would not likely have 4-6" extra on each side)?

I've made multiple double sided baby and lap quilts which turned out fine. The biggest challenge was aligning them for the quilt sandwich, but hand basting and hand quilting facilitated adjustments of minor size differences. What initially seemed like extra bulk and/or stiffness disappeared with a few washingss. My granddaughter enjoyed her choice of a cats vs princesses top.

There are several reasons why I might do a pieced back
a. It helps me use up the scraps left over from piecing the front,
b. I may not have quite enough coordinating fabric for the back of the quilt so I will piece something into it,
c. I want to use up other scraps,
d. Just because LOL,
e. I want to make the back more interesting...

I've done pieced backs and really like the results. I tend to use a few large scraps from the front to sew into larger pieces of backing fabric. They "float" this way and it doesn't take too long. The visual interest is worth the extra time
and using up coordinating scraps is a win-win.

I recently started making scrappy backings and reversible quilts because I am am on a strict "fabric-diet" and won't let myself buy any new fabric unless absolutely necessary until I have my scraps under control, and I've also trying to use up the pile of floppies that have been sitting around unloved for way too many years.
I'm just learning to FMQ, so I don't have a point of reference on whether it is easier or harder, but I absolutely love it! So far my backs and fronts have been completely different, so it's like making two quilts in one, but with half the work and half the batting. It makes me feels o productive!
