I have used 2 layers of batting and it does make a difference in the weight of a quilt. I did machine quilt it in straight lines, but I loved it this winter.

Be glad you are in the US, in the Toronto, Ontario area we are paying 1.20/litre or approx 4.80 a US gallon!!!!. And the Cdn dollar is currently par or better. Darn gov't taxes.

When the thread goes through the tension dial, make sure you give it a little pull to ensure it is seated properly. That made a big difference for me.
