Sometimes the salvage is tight so I cut off the salvage then fold it several times and get a nice straight cut before I begin to cut my strips for binding or borders.

I prefer using the length of the fabric as it has...
I prefer using the length of the fabric as it has less give and if I'm trying to square up a quilt that has had a lot of quilting it keeps that eased in body of the quilt stable.
