The first and only three quilts I have made I have tied off.
About every 5 or 6 inches I tie, using crochet or embrodiery thread to go with the quilt. I put the needle thru the layers twice and tie it with two knots. I leave a good inch of thread with the four sticking up almost looks like short cat wiskers.
