My vet told me that he puts stitches in cats pretty often where people have taken scissors to the mats and the cat objected....I agree with the folks who said to get him shaved under sedation at the vet and start over so he can groom himself. And if she needs spaying (hint, hint, hint) they can do it while she's there and only knock her out once.
