This is the first time I'm jumping in a board, so bear with me pls. I've taken quilting classes starting many years ago with beginner quilting at adult ed. classes in a local school, classes at quilt shops and classes online (QuiltUniversity). You'd think I'd be expert by now!!! But each class gives certain little tips or shortcuts that make it worthwhile. I did belong to a guild for several years - classes there were free or very cheap. The development I live in has a quilters' group that meets once a week and has some very talented, sharing women. My most favorite way, however, is to get together with 3 or 4 other quilters and sit n stitch. :-P
