The woman said it was made with velvet so it must have been a show piece not an everyday use quilt, right? Can't wash velvet at that time anyway. I would think the family knew to keep it put away.
I have a question, well it's just one of a million about quilting really. Fabric and thread shouldn't be stored in a plastic/rubber container?

A pillow case keeps out the dust and spiders and it can not sweat. I loosely lay my quilts in cases and never fold them so there is never a crease. Some I roll with archival paper on an archival roll. Say no thank you to plastic and air tight plastic containers.
