I have 2 older Brother machines that use floppies OR design cards. I have the PE Design software, but it is much easier to just put my designs on a floppy and go to the machine. If you want to discuss how I do it, I can walk you thru the steps from downloading the design from the internet site to actually transferring to the floppy. Been doing it for 8 yrs at least. The only items needed are a floppy (3.5" floppy) drive, either already installed in your computer or an external. I have 2 from ebay that cost about $12 ea. (got a back-up!) You need a computer with USB port. You need a free program to re-format your designs in case you don't download the correct format for your machine. The rest is eezy peezy.
