My go -to baby quilt is alternating 9-patch blocks with squares of the focus fabric, or making snowball blocks alternating with 9-patch blocks. Years ago I attended a lecture by Mary Ellen Hopkins who stressed making simple blocks, but with gorgeous fabrics, makes for great quilts. To me, fabric makes the quilt, especially a baby quilt. I don't know if it helps or not, but sometimes simple is better.
