The vinyl in my house (replaced all the carpet) looks just like hardwood flooring. It even feels like wood boards. Many of my friends are surprised when I tell them it's vinyl instead of laminate or hardwood.
I had that for about 15 years in my dining room and kitchen. It was awesome. No one ever realized it wasn't wood until I told them.
Some laminate can be ruined just be spills that are not cleaned up properly or by overly wet mopping. If you go with laminate, make sure you understand the care instructions. I have a friend who made a very expensive mistake with it.
