I am doing the applique with wool. With wool appliqué you do not need to turn a seam. Cut to size and blanket stitch it down. My background fabric is cotton, I do prefer to use it and for big projects it is less expensive. I like the mix of different fabric weights and textures. I have found the wool appliqué to be easier because you do not need to turn the seam over.
I like the finished results a lot Maybe you can give wool appliqué a try...
