We've had dogs for over 45 yrs (from itty bittys to Great Danes and they have never been allowed on the furniture. We took our granddaughter's black lab when they moved to an apartment and I was horrified to walk into the livingroom and find it stretched out on the white sofa! Now I put a long handled Swiffer mop on the sofa. It lives there day and night unless someone is sitting there and slips beneath the sofa when not in use. The secret is to make it uncomfortable. I did train one dog with mousetraps but I don't think the cat would like them.
