Week 4
Good morning! I was gone most of Thursday and all of Friday (overnight visit to the other daughter who lives in Phoenix) and didnt check in but knew everyone and everything would be fine. And now, on to the big finish.
You have two piles of HSTs. Before you go any farther in making your center piece, take a look at the finished block shown below in the 4th picture down . Depending on the arrangement of your blocks, you decide which will be the star. You do not have to have your C (my green) make the points of the friendship star. I like the layout I ended up with, but admit that I played around with the blocks and with visualizing the borders and sashing. But it is totally up to you, and if you have fabric enough to make any changes. Take a good look at your blocks and play with the arrangement before you cut the remaining pieces. But I will continue giving my directions with the original A, B, and C colors.
From your remaining B cut four 4-1/2 squares. From remaining A cut twelve 2-1/2 squares. As shown in the picture, make the center squares. Draw a line from corner to corner on the twelve 2-1/2 Sew the 2-1/2 squares on opposite corner a scant distance from your line to make sure you get the corners to match up. Press to the corner. Repeat with remaining corners. When you press, slightly pull the corners to match so you get a perfect 4-1/2 block. Any tiny pucker at the fold line of the A fabric will not be noticed after you press and quilt it. Trim away excess fabric.
Make 3 blocks - Assemble blocks in rows of 3 to make a 12-1/2 square. Sew 3 blocks together to make a 12-1/2" by 36-1/2 strip.
For sashing: Cut 3 pieces of B - WOF at 1-1/2. Sew onto short sides, press, then sew onto long sides. Press.
For border Cut 3 pieces of A WOF at 2-1/2. Sew onto short ends, press, then sew onto long sides. Press.
For binding I used 3 pieces WOF of C cut at 2 I like a tight binding on runners and wall-hangings. But you use whatever binding you like.
And woo hoo, your top is complete. Now, at the beginning I told you I was going to make a reversible runner with fall on one side and Halloween duplicated on the other. Had to go to the store for the Halloween because nothing in my stash, but when I saw this piece I couldnt imagine cutting it up. So it still is reversible, just not pieced on the back!
And for those who would be interested in how this pattern works in something other than a runner, I have made black and white mock-ups ( printer was out of colored ink) showing a table top made with 4 blocks and a wall hanging made with 9 blocks wanted to give you an idea of the fantastic secondary patterns that come out in a wider piece. I love this pattern and plan on making it again in something larger.
We are done with this fun train ride already, it was too short! Hope everyone enjoyed the ride. I think I will aim for a start date of January 1 something fun to start the new year off with a bang.
