I take the fabrics that I am not that fond of or find at an used store and I make dog quilts. They are so much fun to make because you can make them any way that you want and the shelters adore getting them. I have always loved dogs and it makes me so sad to see them end up at a shelter. What I wish I could find is a shelter that sent the quilt home with the dog. I always take my new puppy and move their first quilt all over them to get the scent of home on the quilt. Those quilts remind them of home and they love having them to comfort them. They don't whine as much when trying to sleep because it smells like the home they came from.
And basically the dogs are not picky, neither are the cats so it it is not a masterpiece they don't seem to mind.
