My Mom made hundreds (really!) of lap quilts/wheelchair lap quilts for nursing homes.She belonged to a church group that made them - but I think my Mom did about 75% or more of the sewing. The other ladies would help tie them.

Mom had cats - so some of the people had trouble working on them.

She usually lined them with another layer of fabric instead of batting and did the "birthing" method of constructing them.

I think they were approximately 36 x 45 - so they would not get caught in the wheelchair wheels.

She would make tops - and then wait until she had an appropriate backing (one that coordinated with the front) - rather than put any old thing together. Most of them were very attractive.
