Lamp cord wire from a hardware store is just fine, I use it all the time. I usually use a slightly heavier wire for the motor, but I don't think I really need to.
I can't see the entire underside in your last picture, but I'm guessing you can drop the feed dogs, just can't tell which control might do that for you.
