I thought of using a variegated or beige thread. My friend thought that black thread might be more available back then and therefore used. I'm a little unsure but I suppose I could try in on a scrap!

There's 45 big squares and 135 small squares. I just cut triangles and pieced. I'm still learning about shortcuts and other things. I have a book of patterns that I used templates from but arranged in this pattern that I saw at a quilt show.

imo, a flower would be too fussy for that quilt. it's a very masculine looking one and should be quilted with a simple design.
either 1/4" inside the larger square or a circle inside the larger square. i would sid around the rectangle that encloses the small triangles.
what size are the large and small triangles and the quilt? and are you hand- or machine- quilting it?
i think medium brown thread. it will show, but not take over.

During that period, two rows of quilting, a quarter inch apart were done as a rule. I made a CWQ that is a family album and had it done with the double row throughout. It was a very plain, echo type done next to the seams.
