I believe the story behind it would be that some years ago (I am 58) lots of small churches did not have air conditioning and consequently folks used hand held paper fans (looks like a lt weight card board with a nice picture and sometimes a funeral home ad on the back ) stapled to a larger tongue depressor. You fanned yourself to cool and discourage mosquitoes!! I grew up with these.

Very Nice Harriet! You have been busy, as usual! Remember that my father was having a difficult time, and he passed away at the very end of the show in Knoxville, at 4 p.m. I had just finished with everything and went immediately there. I looked for you before I left, but couldn't find you to let you know. My brother had just left and his breathing pattern changed. The hospice nurse recognized his change and got my Mom in there. She held his hand, and told him she was there, and the next breath he breathed was his last. I am so glad she was there to hold his hand!
