A while back I posted a pic of my 1930's pinwheel for my 5 yr old daughter. I've finally decided to hand quilt it using the Baptist Fan pattern. Has anyone done this by hand? Am I crazy for trying this as a beginner? I have hand quilted 2 other quilts, but they were small and I simply did straight lines.

Have you taken into account the number of seams you will have to cross? That might give me pause....

Do ya think it would be easier to quilt 1/4 inch from seam? I was actually planning on Baptist Fan pattern inside each block and then something different in the sashing.

The blocks look big enough so that crossing the seams shouldn't be all that bad.

I love the Baptist Fan pattern, but traditionally it was used as an all-over pattern for a quilt. I could be wrong, but I'm thinking it might look strange confined to a block. Were you thinking of layering the fans as in the traditional way of doing it? Or were you just going to do one fan per block? And how far apart were you planning the quilting lines? All of those things will affect how it looks.

Yes, I'm going to do an all over pattern! I think it will look nice.

Being new to quilting.....what is the "Baptist Fan" quilting pattern?

I'm a southern baptist but never heard of this stitch!

For years I have admired the Baptist Fan quilting and wanted to do it on a quilt.

I finally did it...on a queen-sized quilt...

And all I can say is NEVER AGAIN!
Not only was it difficult to cross over corners where 3+ seams meet, but it is BORING to do on a large quilt. BORING BORING BORING!

I love the look...but I don't think I'll ever do it again except for a small quilt.

That's my 2 cents worth anyway! LOL

Here is a picture of the quilt I did it on...
