I did shrink flowers out of organza for my dgd's first communion dress (on an overskirt). They were really awesome! If you use some pretty fabric, stipple or grid stitch it, then shrink it, you can cut it into pieces to scatter into the quilt. Would be a great feature! I don't know why you would put muslin in, you aren't actually shrinking the fabric, only the stailizer under the fabric, and muslin wouldn't shrink like that (at least not uniformly). Go for it...use it sparingly, it is pricey, but would be a wonderful look, I can even envision it in a crazy quilt!

I have taken a cooling rack ... the kind with the small square like openings ... used a pencile and pushed my fabric through all the holes. Then I placed a piece of fuseable on the flat side and ironed it on. It made a great textured piece of fabric which I the used to make a purse. Useing this method, it wouldn't be too expensive to use it for or in a quilt. Great for art quilts too.
