It's no big deal to do but I was determined to try to figure out why it wouldn't 'engage'. Now I'm thinking "Never mind!"

Probably just needs a new washer. Mine was worn out and did the same thing. If you don't have a cupped washer, just use a regular washer + the old one. That will keep the winder assembly up against where it needs to go.

Default Regular washer + old cupped will work

This is why winder assembly won't stay up toward the belt guard/handwheel. Chances are, it's the washer needing to be replaced. My thumb is resting on the belt guard.

Yours is a handcrank so some of this will not apply. Same principle of though probably with the bobbin winder itself.

I was reading my posts and I saw so many typos! I only have a cell phone, so its rough... guess you can't edit after it's been posted for a certain amount of time. Sorry about that!

    Sewxwhat,

Thanks for the great explanation and graphics. I haven't had to do this (yet) but it will be great if I ever do. Others can easily benefit also.

    Thanks for the suggestions, SewXwhat.

I don't have a washer or spring on my bobbin assembly. Am I supposed to? I wouldn't be surprised if they went MIA in the over 100 years of the machines existence.

Yikes and never mind because after seeing your photos I didn't think I could reassemble everything so it would wind a bobbin as well as it does now.

Really, there should be two of those dome shaped/Belleville washers. Are important because they are what gives the assembly some spring. They are also called a spring. One goes behind the heart shaped cam and the other one goes with the screw attaching to the belt guard. I'm not sure how the Bobbin winder would stay up against the wheel or belt, depending on model, if the washer is not there? Mine won't.

I am so happy that you attempted it! :-) Good on you

You are Very welcome. I hope the photos are showing up. They won't for me. I was really happy to share the one about the thread guide on the long bobbin winder and how to position it.
