    Default Quilt for College

I would like to make a quilt for my granddaughter when she goes to college. My question is: what size should it be to fit an extra long mattress?

I am sorry I can't answer your ? on size, however I have a story about my college bed quilt which may give you an idea.

I received a simple patchwork quilt made out of blue jeans when I went off to college. The maker included pockets on some of her blocks. The backing was red denim. That quilt is still with me today 35 years later. It was used by my 3 children growing up and brought to ball games, picnics etc. It still looks great! You may already have your fabrics or theme but I thought I would share. Have fun!

The idea of using denim for a college quilt is a great suggestion. Remember that college beds are used for a lot of sitting as well as just sleeping. A quilt will get some rough use with moving about, food, beverages, and everyday hard use/abuse.

I usually try to shoot for 70x95 for twin long. It gives a 15 inch drop on the sides and bottom. My daughter likes to tuck the bottom under her mattress, so a few more inches is helpful.

I make all my nieces & nephews quilts for graduation. I use mostly denim & flannel, they seem to hold up well and the kids like them. I do make them about 70 x 95 also.

I made my son a king size quilt that could be doubled over for his college dorm bed. That way he was able to keep really warm and not have a lot of bedding to worry about. He still has it and uses it for extra warmth in the guest bedroom in his home.
