Default Are these the same thing?

Can anyone tell me if Quilt as you Go is the same as the method used by Marti Michell in her book Machine Quilting in sections? I'm looking for and easier way to quilt large quilts but I don't like the look of quilt as you go blocks with their sashing strips.

yes you could say they are. you can quilt as you go in sections, strips, blocks, rows, etc. some quilt as you go does require sashing strips. there are tutorials out there on that too.

Marti Mitchell's book has different methods for reducing the bulk in a quilt. I don't like the quilt as you go look but she has some other great methods that work really well.

I would say they're mostly different, though if you look very hard you will find similarities. With quilting in sections you do need to think about how you're going to divide up the top and/or the batting before assembling the top, but you don't quilt it block by block. Marti has several different methods in her book, and she explains, by using example quilts, why you would select one method for one quilt and a different method for another quilt. Her book was the only reason I was able to quilt large quilts on my DSM before getting a longarm.

I really like the QAYG as blocks joined with sashing strips.

If you first sew your blocks into strips you won't need sashing.

I use her method a lot for larger quilts and like it a lot. Sometimes I use sashing and sometimes I don't. She offers several methods in the book so you can choose the one that works for you and for the quilt.

Just basted a king size quilt that I quilted in 3rds a la Marti Michell--went beautifully! I can send you the instructions that I used if you like. Just send me an email address to which I can attach a Word file.

I recently watched a video that Leah Day put out, where she created very large blocks and joined them using the the same fabric that was in the block top. This did not create the box look, and only visible when looking for seams. So, it didn't really look like a typical QAYG quilt.
