Singer 301 and Singer 15-91.

Having just finished up the binding and edges for my daughter's quilt - if you are using a 201 and you are in the middle of a large quilt and you need to change the bobbin out - what do you do?

With the 15, I tip the machine up and change it without having to move the whole quilt out of the way. This winter I'm going to have DH make me a FMQ table for the 15. It will be open underneath so I can change the bobbin from the underside without moving the machine. Though hopefully he'll have the Two Spool ready for use, though it's a treadle.

Tip the machine forward and look under it. There is a thumb screw to the right and above the bobbin. The top of the screw faces to your right. Unscrew this screw as far as possible. This will stop the feed dogs. Make sure to reset this when you are finished. This will be on page 35 of the manual. I downloaded the pages of the manual that I needed for free and printed them off.

Another vote for the 301. She does a great job. When her cord was being repaired, the only back up that would FMQ was a vintage Necchi - also with a vertical bobbin. I suspect the 15 clone would, but where it sits isn't convenient for FMQ and it's too heavy to move easily. An advantage of the 15 clone and the Necchi is that the bobbins are fat and hold a lot more thread, but the 301 still wins.

When you FMQ with the 301 or 15-90 of which I have both do you use a quilting foot or do you free style without one?! Do use a hoop or no hoop!? Do use some kind of slippery silicone cover on your bed of your machine or a spray perhaps!? I'm just learning and haven't had much success with FMQ.

Humdinger847-this is an old topic, although maybe I can help. I haven't FMQ on my 301, yet, and don't have a 15, but I spray a fabric safe silicone spray on the bed of the machine. Also, the table and machine should be the same height, because if not, the weight of the quilt causes a drag, which makes it hard to FMQ. Also, FMQ takes a of practice.

Yes I know it's an old post. All the posts I need help on are old posts. Guess I'll just continue to lurk in the background and read old post.

@Humdinger847 I have and use a 15-91 which i use daily (almost). I've yet (soon hopefully) to obtain an original quilting foot so i have no idea on the benefits but have found the use a hoop to be helpful at times. My advice is just to practice & experiment to see what works best for yourself. I also find i don't have the need to use a spray lube on the bed either.

I’m also a 301 lady...It’s the only machine I used to FM...I just don’t seem to get it right on all my newer models...Not that I’m a great FM’er but the little I do along w/some thread painting is done on my 301.

Hi hobbykat,
Do you use a darning foot for your FMQ, a hoop or anything? I haven't got a slant foot for my 301A. I have much greater success with my 15-90 when it comes to FMQ.
