Consider a deep dark purple, or matching colors already in the blocks with rich jewel colors, bright or dark, if you do the sashing.

And or make it a center piece of a larger quilt with like minded bright colors. You could create a complementary pattern to accentuate the gorgeous pieces. I think this is a great idea, althou I might consider a black backgrond as others have suggested. You are lucky to have such a great friend.
