Welcome from another Aussie. There are quite a few patchwork shops around Brisbane who will be more than willing to guide you with fabric and a simple quilt pattern to start on. Also a lot of free quilt patterns on the net.

Welcome from another Washingtonian. A 9 patch is good, as are the 4 patch, the rail fence and the disappearing 9 patch which really is fun as others have said. A 9 patch can be alternated with a solid block to make the Irish Chain.
