Both my girls received a fully stocked nice sewing basket when they moved out on their own. I put in two pair of quality scissors because I knew one pair would be used to cut anything. I would have given a son one too but I don't have any sons just son in law.

Well, even if I didn't sew, how would you get out a splinter without a needle? I have one in each First Aid kit, each bathroom, and of course my sewing room has them at the ready as well as 2 or 3 packs in the drawer. I guess there are lots of folks that have never handled one much less threaded one. Oh, I have recentlly started to carry a needle case with pins, needles, thread, scissors that I received from one of the dear folks here on the board. Great little case.

We are in the process of getting DD ready for her 1st year at college. One of the things she wanted was a small sewing kit, just the basics. I gave her a look of surprise and she said, "Mom, I need to be prepared for anything!" I must have done something right!

DD also got a small sewing kit when she went off to college. Later I found a wonderful fish tackle box for her next birthday. She still has it and always knows where a needle is when I come to her house LOL. Last time I spent there thought I was going to get some quilting done. Instead emptied a large laundry basket of meding!!

I was in Europe and my backpack strap was coming apart. It was a new high quality small delivery type pack with only one strap. I usually keep a hotel kit with me, but didn't have it this time. So I found a fabric store, bought needles, heavy thread, and thimble. (once a quilter, I rarely sew without a thimble!). A fabric store was my "must find" that day in some small town, so I could repair the bag. By the way I have used the bag on many more trips.... No more sewing has been needed.

I hate to mend probably because I am not good at it!! We had a neighbor who could mend and you would not be able to tell it was mended. But she passed away.

I am a quilter but not a seamstress! LOL

I taught my son to sew and use a sewing machine, I also gave my daughter a full sewing kit for her birthday one year when she was leaving home, sewing box the lot, nice to know that she is sill using it five years later! At her home recently we set to making curtains for her bedroom, guess what ...... out came the sewing box, everything in it all neat and tidy, I was well pleased!

My DD had to bring a shirt to me to have a button sewn back on because she didn't have needle, thread, or even scissors she could locate! So...guess what she got for Christmas the next year! Got together basic thread, needles, safety pins, small scissors, etc., and put them in a nice little tin!

I'll bet that family still thinks of you and the needle you lent them.

My friend asked me the other day if I had hand-sewing needles and if she could borrow one. So yes, I understand.
