I can never decide on just 1 or 2 pieces of fabric, so..I buy a lot of 1/2 yd to 1 1/2 yd pieces. Guess I'm the queen of scrap quilts.

I think I must be the impulse queen having read all your comments. I usually buy what is left on the roll. My worse impulse buy was in a small country town when I went into a fabric shop that was closing down. We were going to be back through there in a week & I asked if they would still be open. She said she hoped not, all she had to do was sell all her stock & then she would close. I offered a price for the lot! Luckily we have a large station wagon!!!My poor husband muttered all the way to our holiday destination & home again.

I usually buy at least 2 yards, but if I really love it 6 yards.
But not so much anymore as fabric has gotten so expensive and my stash is already huge.

usually I buy one yard if I know I won't use it a lot. If I really love it, I buy 4 yards. I read that somewhere, but can't remember who said it.

I'm the end of bolt queen. I went in to buy 3 1/2 yards of white fabric. I walked out with that, 1.75 yards of cream, 2.75 yards of purple batik, and 3.25 yard piece of green/purple/blue batik.

 The last two pieces will match a group that's already in my stash. I don't know what pattern I'll use, but it's going to be pretty. :)

I tend to buy the whole bolt if it is a good backing or wide backing, but always with a coupon! I just bought a whole bolt of beautiful light blue paisley 110" wide backing with 40% plus addtnl 10% off at Joann's.

So many times I would find a drop-dead georgous fabric and buy 3 or 4 yards, and find I wanted to use it for a border and it would be just not enough! It is really frustrating! If I use it for a smaller project, I always find use for left-overs in other quilts, right down to the last scrap used for applique. I am amazed when I look back at many of my quilts how many of the same fabrics I used each one. I should also say, living in Vanuatu where we had no fabric stores, I loaded up when I came back to the States, so I had a really large stash to pick fabrics from. If I didn't have enough of one for a quilt I wanted to make and If I didn't have another suitable fabric in its place, I had to pick another pattern. I don't have that problem now that I live back in the States.
