My family made "comforters" out of wool pieces, backed with flannel. They were all tied. I still have a few of them. My Mom pieced a quilt with polyster knit material. It is too thick to quilt so I will tie it. It is red, white and blue and very pretty. I'm going to tie it with Perle Cotton #3.

I am a fan of tied quilts. They look so comfy and old fashioned. And contrary to what someone said earlier, mine haven't worn out. Last one from the eighties, is still looking great.

I used to help my grandma tie quilts which she had sewn from fortrel fabric or wool clothing. I still have them and they are 40+ years old and other than the occaisionally one coming undone, they are still beautiful and useful quilts. I wish I had her quilt frame and I would tie the one every once in a while. They are old-fashioned but it brings back many wonderful memories of her.

I tie lots of quilts. Especially baby quilts. I like to hand quilt and sometimes I sent them out to be quilted.

I tie t-shirt quilts also. They are to thick to even consider hand quilting and I doubt the effect of machine quilting would add anything to the finished project.

I tie all my quilts, I made 10 so far. I love the old timey look. Not to mention I do not have a long arm and would not even try quilting on my regular sewing machine. So for me it works for now---one day I will get the nerve to try it---live and learn new things every day!!!

I just use a regular embroidery needle, but I do take an extra stitch so they don't untie as easily. Don't know why you would need a special needle.

Try a tapestry needle that has a sharp point on it. They are a little harder to find. I have also used embroidery floss to tie with as I like the shine of the floss over yarn.

What do you like to use for the ties? I have to replace some in a flea market find.

Your not the only one to tie quilts. At quilt guild yesterday there were 3 tied quilts. The lady gives them to her grandkids. She says if they use them "hard" its OK because they were made with love.
